As a long time participant in the annual Martin Luther King Marade (MLK), I was proud that some of the Servicios de La Raza staff, again, participated in the march from City Park to the Civic Center this past January. Since its inception in 1972, Servicios de La Raza has been a strong community advocate for justice and peace. We make a conscious and daily effort to embody the principles and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Rodolfo Corky Gonzales, Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and the hundreds and thousands of other leaders, in our country’s history, who have sacrificied so much for so many to live a better and more just life.
And now we are faced with an onslaught of anti-humane, immigrant legislative attempts to wipe away the gains nay, the rights, that the aforementioned leaders and millions of faceless others marched for . . .for which they were jailed, beaten, bloodied and died. With indifference, arrogance, bigotry and racism, these misguided people put our communities and our economy at great risk to satisfy an unfounded fear and loathing of cultural and linguistic differences. Servicios de La Raza will continue to work with organizations such as CIRC, Escuela Tlatelolco, CPC, RAP, 9 to 5, COLOR, and Padres y Jovenes Unidos to seek justice and rights for humanity and equality for all. This is our pledge to our communities and an unshakeable organizational value. At Servicios, humanity always trumps politics . . . always.
