Sometimes, however, those who do not have a need for these community services might ask themselves, “Why should I give?” The answer is simple, really. Servicios de La Raza helps to build a stronger community; a community in which YOU live! Not only do we help others with basic services such as a food bank, but we also teach others how to help themselves by assisting youth in finding employment or finishing their education, by aiding victims of domestic violence to break the cycle, and through many other programs that empower individuals to lead healthier, more productive lives.

Tonight Servicios de La Raza in partnership with Escuela Tlatelolco, GRASP and Grupo Tlaloc will be sponsoring the 24th year commemoration of Dias de Los Muertos in Denver.  This event is the longest running Dias de Los Muertos commemoration in Denver.  Started by Escuela Tlatelolco and Servicios de La Raza in 1988, the event includes a candle light procession from La Raza Park at W. 38th Ave and Osage Street Denver, and ends with a traditional Muertos feast and ceremony at the Masonic Lodge at W. 35th Ave and Federal Blvd. Denver.  The event begins at 5:30 PM.

 
Dias de Los Muertos has its roots in Mexico’s indigenous cultures.  The indigenous people married Christianity with their indigenous spiritual beliefs and practices to birth this commemoration to honor the dead who are believed to return to earth on November 2nd of each year.  Altares (Altars) are constructed and adorned with candles, incenses, flowers, art, food, drink, keepsakes and pictures of loved ones now deceased.

 
The event is open to the public and everyone is welcome to participate in this moving, emotional and spiritual awakening.  Que viva Los Dias de Los Muertos!

In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. That same year the first national toll-free hotline was begun. In 1989 the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation was passed by the U.S. Congress.

Following this movement Servicios de La Raza began services for domestic violence in the early ’90s. Today, Servicios prides on being a culturally competent and culturally responsive bilingual agency. Servicios places a high value on the safety of our clients and community education and prevention of domestic violence, sexual assault, and teen dating violence.

In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Servicios has organized a fun event. Salsa Mash is a mash-up of Monster Mash with a latin flavor Salsa.
This event is on Thursday October 25th from 7pm-10pm at Blue Ice on 22 Broadway in Denver Colorado.

Theme: Costume Contest/ SCARE THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!

]]> http://serviciosdelaraza.org/salsa-mash/feed/ 0 Register to Vote by Tomorrow 10/9!!! http://serviciosdelaraza.org/register-to-vote-by-tomorrow-109/ http://serviciosdelaraza.org/register-to-vote-by-tomorrow-109/#comments Mon, 08 Oct 2012 18:27:56 +0000 angelaa http://serviciosdelaraza.org/?p=1129 When did voting begin to feel like a scene from the movie Mission Impossible?  Making voters feel like they have to jump through hoops to be able to place their ballot in the voting box.  Depending on where you live in the nation this is exactly what it feels like.  According to the Fair Election Legal Network, in the past two years, over 30 states have introduced legislation or enacted laws that would curb voter’s access to voting.  What does this mean? It means that in certain states, laws have been strategically placed to make it more difficult for certain individuals to place their vote.  For example, in Kansas it is now required to present proof of your citizenship in order to be able to register to vote.   It is believed that about 7 percent of American Citizens do not have such proof. The purpose of these new laws is to protect the identity of voters and avoid voter fraud.  Yet, no proof of voter fraud has ever been reported.  Registering to vote and voting has become such an ordeal that people get frustrated and just turn around and go home.  Never registering and never voting again.  Give a person a bad experience and they are more likely to never want to try it again. Unfortunately, these new laws target certain minority groups such as African Americans, Hispanics, students and the elderly.

 

Let us not be victims of these laws. We must make our voices heard.    It is now or never.  The stakes are high.  No matter what your political views are it is time to take action, so go out there and register to vote.  If you have already registered, take action by getting family, friends or strangers to register.  You can make a difference in these elections.  October 9th is your last opportunity to register.  Do not waste any more time and register today!

Parents and Caregivers, please check your child’s car seat to ensure that it’s correct for their age and size and to ensure that it’s correctly installed.  The majority of car seats are not used correctly which increases a child’s risk of injury or death in a car crash!

Please note that Servicios de La Raza is certified fit station for child passenger safety seats through the Colorado Department of Transportation. We offer car seat and safety training sessions.
